I had a feeling you might like these, Ramya. That senes of him remembering the landscapes of dreams is what I love about his work too. And I see a lot of Palmer’s aesthetic in some of Matthew Wong’s art too (Though I have no idea if Wong would have known of him)
Yes, he does remind me a lot of Wong! Harvest Moon, Shoreham reminds me of Wong's In the Realm of Appearances—it would be really cool if it turned out that Wong had been influenced by Palmer.
Hey Rishi, I am not being cantakerous or trying to show you up. But the second to last painting is beyond wonderful!!!
Seriously, I was going to comment that this whole essay (and art, and artist) is beyond wonderful. My favorite piece was the second to last one, so there you go.
So good to see him celebrated. I saw an exhibition of him years ago at I think the British Library but it didn’t do him justice. He deserves so much more. Thank you George!
Yes, I’ve had a similar experience with his work when seeing it in galleries too. But it’s a shame, because with a little more thoughtful curation, I think so many more people would see his work as worthy of attention.
I came across Palmer recently, in the book "Blake's Dante" by Milton Klonsky, which describes Palmer's acquaintance with Blake in the book's introduction. It's wonderful to see his work here, thank you!
Thank you for introducing me to this talented artist. His self portrait is really very affecting. I was sad to read that his mother died suddenly when he was young and that later he also lost one of his own sons. There is a melancholy evident in many of these works but they are so striking in their style.
Thank you for introducing me to Palmer—he has such a distinctive and evocative style, and these landscapes seem almost landscapes from dreams.

His lines are very expressive in a way that foreshadows Van Gogh. Thanks for putting me on to a new British artist!
Simply beautiful. Several of these affected me like many others don’t.
I’m really glad to know you felt that. Thanks for reading.
He was ahead of his time! That last painting is wonderful.
Absolutely. I think even now, we have not yet fully appreciated just how ahead of his time he was!

Hopefully, we can be friends.

Oh cool. I've never read that book, but really glad to know you enjoyed seeing a few more of his works here.
May I also thank you for a most interesting and informative introduction to Palmer this really is a great Substack.

Marvellous piece as usual. His ‘Magic Apple Tree’ in the Fitzwilliam is one of my all time favourites
Very impressive pieces of art. I like them very much. Thank you, George.
