this reminds me of georgia o’keeffe’s fascination with cerro pedernal, a mountain on the horizon south of ghost ranch. she was quoted as saying something like “god told me if i painted it enough, he would give it to me”…indeed…or monet’s haystacks…just gotta paint it one more time, after time, after time…
I just returned from a trip to Georgia O'Keeffe Country, and after seeing Pedernal in person and her paintings of it, I felt the same way when I saw Cezanne's mountain here.
Love this! Cezanne's landscapes are some of my all-time favorites. I've seen the works shown here at the Met, the Philly museum of art, and the Barnes Foundation. (And I have the Barnes version as a canvas print in my home...) Just so gorgeous. Thanks for sharing!
That’s really cool. It’s remarkable just how much gravitas and vibrancy his work has in real life. (I’ve been fortunate to spend time with his paintings in a few different locations too!)
Yes thankyou for the photograph and thanks also for the opportunity to look at so many beautiful paintings. Cezanne consistently painted the mountain peak more horizontal than it actually appears in the photo - I wonder why he did that?
I felt his landscapes when I was in Lacoste for a summer of painting en plein air. That was many years ago, but stays with me to this day: the mountains and Cezanne's art.
Maybe lots of people knew this, but I, fancy myself as a Cezanne aficionado, had never realised your perception of the landscape drawing us in. Obvious now, but not to me until today. Thank you!!

That’s a really great connection to make between the two of them. Would make a brilliant exhibition to show both artists in one show!
Thanks George. Wonderful post for those of us who love to just stare at the art. It comes alive when you can compare different perspectives!
I know what you mean when you say the artist's landscape draws the viewer in. I sensed that as well.

But I love that you have a print copy too!
Now I am beginning to understand your description “The Artist, Artist “.

Wow, a summer of painting there sounds lovely! And even better that the memory of that, and his art too, has stayed with you. Thanks for sharing.

Perfect timing for the Cézanne 2025 festival in Aix!! So jealous of those who live near enough to attend. Thank you for sharing this, George! :)
I would love to say that was intentional, but I actually had no idea there even was a Cezanne festival!
So now you’ve made me slightly jealous too Nicole! :)

I’m glad to know that, Mike. And as ever, thank you for your support.
Great post. Thanks.
A wonderful selection, some of which were new to me—and I love that you included a photograph at the close.
