Too bad the book never materialized, I'd get it. Thanks for the selections.

Same here. I’m actually suprised a modern art publisher hasn’t picked it up yet as a special project.

Falling in love at the age of 50 started a whole new series of paintings of flowers which he continued for the duration of his life and marriage.

Beautiful paintings! I want to send these to the poet Pascale Petit, but I'm not on social media anymore. They remind me of her book My Hummingbird Father, which is partly set in the Amazon. I wonder if she knows about this artist.

We learn that so often, an artist's work is not recognised in his or her lifetime. I guess Heade was privileged to be able to travel widely in the pursuit of his art, regardless.

Do you think he has depicted himself and his dog in the bottom right of The Brazilian Rainforest?!

I've seen Heade's work in the Met Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, If I remember right. His paintings truly are gems! His travels remind me of his British contemporary Marianne North (1830-1890) who, although her work is in a different category visually, was also a world traveler and was also influenced by Darwin to visit Australia in particular, to collect and paint "undescribed" species of plants, flowers and insects.
