Showing an ordinary morning on an ordinary street in the artist’s lifelong home of Delft in the Netherlands - this is a small painting even by Vermeer’s standards.
But while it is not necessarily one of the great man’s best known works, nor even his most traditionally beautiful. . . there is no doubt, it is still among his most touching masterpieces.
