Though generally known as among the most prominent Impressionist painters of his time; Edgar Degas actually resented the label of “impressionism” for his art. . . instead, preferring to refer to himself simply as an “Independent”.

And across much of his work, there is certainly always a sense of this “independence” - or a kind “detachment” from the act…
